St. Columba’s Disaster Management Team organized a planned Earthquake Evacuation drill on 27 March’18. As per the directions of the state disaster management it is mandatory for the schools to conduct mock drills in schools. Delhi lies in the seismic zone 4 which is a high risk zone. It becomes all the more important to train the students and the staff to be prepared for any eventuality.
Keeping the School Safety Program in mind and the guidelines of Disaster Management the new staff members were oriented about the entire Disaster Management Plan. The students were also apprised about it by the class teachers and other subject teacher .
An evacuation drill was conducted on 25th of March exclusively for the students of classes 4 and 5. Since they were new to the middle school building it was important that they should be familiar with the exits and the entire process. Mr. Shakti and Mrs. Rawat coordinated it.
The earthquake evacuation drill was conducted for the entire SCS at sharp 9 o'clock. The Siren was sounded. The students did the Duck-Hold and Cover and as soon as the Siren stopped the students along with their teachers started evacuating the building from the exit planned for them.
The teachers deputed on each floor along with the other staff members who were in the staff room assisted with the movement. It took around three and half minutes to four minutes for the entire evacuation process. A few classes took a little longer to reach the field. As soon as the students assembled on the field the teachers in charge did the headcount and reported to the DM team at the foyer steps
After taking an account of the entire process and when everything was found in place, students were asked to move back to their classes. There were certain valuable inputs which were given by the staff. It will be pondered over and if feasible will be implemented in future .Overall it was a satisfactory drill and was helpful in creating awareness.
