Title : SPELLATHON - CLASS 1 (2019-20)

“Spelling deserves a much higher status in the attention of reading educators.” - Dr. Louisa Moats

We at St. Columba’s feel teaching young spellers the strategies, rules and concepts to enhance their spelling and vocabulary benefits them in all aspects of language learning.

On the 30th of July, 2019, a ‘Spellathon Competition’ was organised for the students of Class 1. The objective of the competition was to promote the skill and desire to spell words with precision among the students. ‘The Spellathon’ had an interesting prelude where a boy dressed as the ‘Spell Bee’ enthralled the audience. This was followed by five interesting rounds of questions for the five respective teams of ten students per section, ensuring hundred percent participation of the boys. As the program unfolded, the team work and confidence of the students amazed the audience. All the participants were well prepared with remarkable vocabulary and spelled word after word with much enthusiasm despite some questions being quite challenging. The parents were impressed to witness some very exhilarating moments as the teams from different sections of Class 1 pitted themselves against each other.

Our honourable Principal, Br. Miranda was all praises for the boys and applauded the efforts of the teachers for making the competition a success. While addressing the parents, he emphasised the significance and relevance of spelling in learning the language. Mrs. Ritu Kaushal, the Headmistress of Junior Wing announced the results calling upon the winners amidst cheering from one and all. She delivered an encouraging speech citing the advantages of learning spellings and new vocabulary for students. She invited the grandparents of the students to present the prizes to the winning teams which drew much applause from the parents.
