Title : REMINISCING THE FOUNDER’S MEMORIES (2019-20)

In the loving memory of Sir Edmund rice, founder of our school, the students of St. Columba’s organized the founders’ day assembly.

Sir Edmund Rice was a Roman Catholic missionary and educationalist. He was the founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers. After settling his business affairs in 1802, Rice devoted his life to prayer and charitable work, particularly with the poor and marginalized of Waterford. That same year he established a makeshift school in a converted stable in New Street, Waterford. The spirit to look after the less privileged ones remains ignited till today and this year’s school assembly was to do precisely the same. It was organized to teach us about the values and legacy of sir Edmund Rice, informing us about the work he did for the welfare of people.

The assembly started with musical presentations and dance performances by students from across the school. Teacher representatives from each class read out prayers of Edmund Rice and the students repeated after.

Since Inclusive education is an important aspect of St. Columba’s motto, we had parent representatives from different communities and cultures and a differently abled child representative to offer flowers to the photograph of Sir Edmund Rice.

Towards the end everyone received a card with a prayer by Edmund Rice printed on it. Our principle, Bro. Miranda gave an inspiring speech, thanked everyone and entreated the students to read the Edmund Rice prayer at least once a week.

The assembly showed us how the legacy of Sir Edmund Rice is still alive in our school and it was truly an enriching and memorable moment for all the members of the audience.
