Title : PARENT ORIENTATIONS - CLASSES KG TO 3 (2019-20)

“Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out”. -Robert Collier

We at Junior School of St. Columba's usher in the students from a diverse cross section of society into a protected and happy school environment where we strive for holistic development of our students. Committed to our Founder’s vision of compassion and service, we strongly rely on forming collaborative partnerships with the parents for ensuring and enriching the learning process and growth of our students.

In order to facilitate the same, the third round of Parent Orientation Programmes were organised in the month of November, 2019 for all classes of the Junior Wing.

The Orientation Programmes commenced with a meaningful explanation and recitation of ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ by Rev Br. E.V. Miranda. Post recitation, the reins of the interactive orientation programme were taken over by Mrs. Kaushal, Headmistress of the Junior School who gave a presentation on various teaching and learning processes involving teachers, students and parents.

She began by sharing the review of the data analysis report and explained the need and importance of projections. The discrepancy between the projected and actual marks was presented through a ppt.

The presentation also highlighted challenging areas in the teaching process like large number of students, learning disabilities, language barrier, behavioural issues, regular absenteeism, etc. Mrs Kaushal elaborated the consequent strategies to be used by the teachers to bridge the learning gaps.

The Core Competency Matrix for every subject- English, Maths and Hindi was shown to help the parents enable their child to determine his skill levels in core subjects at the end of the academic year.

Parents were also guided about the various steps taken to ensure a smooth transition from one class to another.

During the Class 3 Orientation there was a detailed presentation on the ASSET Exams by Mr Jeron Joseph. He referred to the ‘Asset My Book’ and explained to the parents how to decipher  the results, recognise the strengths and weaknesses of the students and work through remedial strategies.

In the Orientation of Class 2 as well, parents were updated about the ASSET and much emphasis was laid on its advantages.

During the Class 1 Orientation, Mrs Kaushal highlighted to the parents that as only a quarter is left for our boys to be promoted to the next academic session, there’s a need for collaborative efforts from both teachers and parents to prepare the students mentally, socially and emotionally so that they feel comfortable in the new class.

In the Orientation Session of KG, Mrs. Kaushal apprised the parents of the Hearth Curriculum and how it has been incorporated in our detailed planning to be abreast with changing learning needs of the children. She also suggested to the parents to encourage the use of English language for communication with their children, fuel their curiosity and promote their creativity. Mrs. Anita Panda was given a welcome applause as Brother Miranda introduced her to the parents as the new Coordinator for Kindergarten and Class 1.

During these interactive sessions, much stress was laid on the uniform code, carrying of the school bag properly, self care skills for the students, etc. The forthcomings events of the school were also listed in the ppt.

Finally, the presentations concluded by Rev. Br. E.V. Miranda emphasising on the role of both parents for the holistic development of the child. He encouraged the parents to opt for the school Z-bus facility for the safety and security of the students.

The orientations were highly interactive and enriching sessions both for the parents and the educators.
