Title : ‘POP-UP BOOKS’ - CLASSES KG TO 3 (2019-20)

There isn't a shadow of doubt in acknowledging the importance of books in the lives of students. And what’s better than a book with lots of pictures... that explode right off the page!
In the Junior Wing we had a ‘popping‘ go at Pop-Up books that are feats of paper engineering which invite the attention of even the most reluctant readers. Rather than purchasing them, each class right from Kindergarten to Class 3 set out on a beautiful journey in creating them in their classes.

Pop-up books are not ordinary books. They are books with 3-D illustrations and pictures captivating the attention of their readers. The Junior Wing saw these books becoming mini projects in each class boosting the imagination and reading skills in students. Creating the colourful Pop-up books were fun for all age groups. These books specifically attracted Kinesthetic Learners to reading activities adding to the fun and enjoyable reading experience.

These books were a great way to add an extra incentive and reward to reading, especially for kids who get bored quickly. Touching the 3-D pictures gave the boys the feeling of being inside the story which made the experience all the more engaging and also built up their vocabulary.

The teachers and students of different classes planned their own Pop- Up Book activity based on their class levels.

In Kindergarten, the collaborative efforts of the parents and teachers saw the creation of interesting Pop-Up books for the students. Each student had his own book with colourful pictures popping out and practiced writing sound words associated with the pictures. This helped them in recognizing, learning and writing the sound words in a fun way.

The boys of Classes 1 and 2 had fun creative writing sessions as they pasted pictures in their Pop-Up books and wrote a few sentences about the same. This helped them in writing and speaking sentences on the given topics.

In Class 3, the students had Story- Writing sessions with their Pop- Up books. It was a creatively stimulating experience to paste the pictures of different characters and composing stories. This was followed by a story narration session where the students displayed their creations with pride.

During this innovative and strategic use of of Pop-up books in the Junior Wing, these books were found to be interesting tools for encouraging the students‘ visualisation, creativity, imagination and making them ready for the lifetime of richer reading experiences.

These self created books not only helped the learners in reading and writing narrative text but also allowed them to play around with paper folding, sticking on characters and matching the dialogue boxes with the characters.

This was yet another step of our educators in using strategic interactive aids to make learning a fun filled experience for the students.
