Title : MELIO ONLINE SPEAKING AND POETRY CHALLENGE ( 2020-21 )

Challenges are taken up by the brave... It’s all about hard work, grit and faith.

As we embrace digital learning, synergizing curricular activities is yet another revolutionary feat accomplished by the education sector. Our children from St. Columba’s School got first-hand experience in performing live at the Melio Challenge for Speaking & Poetry Recitation. With the contest going digital, the competition became tougher with participation from not just India but across the world! The challenges were conducted online via the Zoom platform with live streaming for the final rounds.

Reading Aloud and Poetry Recitation go a long way in enhancing the fluency and ease with which children understand, express and communicate in the language. In the Melio Speaking Challenge, our students found a platform to attain exposure by witnessing participants from different schools. With the competitions going global, it was important to groom our students participating in the events. The Elocution teacher through Google Meet spoke and trained the budding talents and gave many valuable tips to hone their skills and enrich their performance.

30 students from the Junior school participated in the competitions during the event held from 19th July – 26th July, 2020. The events were designed for a qualifier round with a team of judges and the final round where only 5 students got shortlisted out of all the participants. In the Under 10 challenge, Dylan Sangma from 3A qualified for the Final Round of the Melio Informative Speech Challenge. He participated with around 200 other participants of various national and international schools. He was selected as one of the Top Five Finalists for the Speaking Challenge where he spoke about the perils and boons of Technology. The other three finalists were from Bahrain and one from Bengaluru. Qualifying for the finals was a big feat in itself. He is the only child from Delhi to have qualified in the finals of this challenge which was open to students of all nationalities.

He also qualified as one of the top five finalists for the Poetry Challenge and brought laurels to the school by securing the 2nd Position in the Final Round.

The hands-on experience of performing in front of the judges was valuable in itself. As the final round was streamed live across the world, the students understood the wide reach of internet in today’s times and the boons that come with it. Our students performed with confidence and surely derived great exposure on this international platform.
