Title : RHYME AND RHYTHM CLASS 6 & 7 (2020-21)

The morning of 26th August for the Middle school teachers and students, was a musical one. It had to be as it was the much awaited Annual Rhyme and Rhythm competition. This year, however, the event had a very different, albeit unique, flavour. It was the first ever online edition of the occasion.

The entire event was divided into two segments – the first segment was for the students of class 6 and the second for class 7. The e-invite and the Google Meet links were shared with all the people concerned, two days prior to the event.

The two segments commenced at 8.30 and 11.00 am respectively. Mrs. Rollins Midhun and Ms. Simrah Mehmood set the event in motion by welcoming the guests – the Principal, Headmistress, section heads, coordinators, the English teachers and undoubtedly, the students of all sections of class 6 and 7 respectively. Following the welcome address, a prayer song was played to commemorate the death anniversary of our founder, Blessed Edmund Rice. Considering the gravity of the situation we’ve been in, we had decided to dedicate this year’s theme to the plethora of emotions each one of us has experienced over the past few months. These times have made us thoroughly comprehend and even redefine – courage, compassion, patience, sacrifice, strength, kindness and empathy. The fact that all of us, together, have been able to experience these powers to deduce the true meaning of life, is what we celebrated, in this year’s class 6 and 7 Rhyme and Rhythm Competition. After communicating this theme with the guests, the section-wise performances initiated. The introduction to each section’s poem and song was provided by Jihaan, in the first segment and by Nevin Raj in the second. Every year till now, Rhyme and Rhythm has included each and every child of a class. But this time, owing to the event being entirely a virtual one, the format was quite different. Despite that, the event was attended by almost two hundred people, in each of the segments. Six students from each section were randomly chosen by Brother Miranda – three of them were to recite the poem and the other three had to sing the song chosen by their respective class. These names were with the coordinator, Mrs. Anup Kaur, who called the students out one by one. The students played the songs’ karaoke by presenting their screens and thereby, sang along. After concluding the five sections’ performances in this manner, in both the segments respectively, the judges for the event – Ms. Grace David and Mrs. Vijayata Chauhan – declared the results. By the time they had prepared the results, some students were called on to share their musical skills with the audience. After the declaration of results, the coordinator, Mrs. Anup Kaur gave her vote of thanks. Mrs. Sheel and the Principal appreciated the efforts of the children and applauded the event incharges, the judges, the English teachers, Mr. MacDonald Samuel and the parents for their contribution in making the event a huge success. Both the segments were then concluded with everyone rising to the tune of the Columban Anthem.

The event proved to be one of its kind, as the teachers’ hardwork and students’ performances worked together to display and uphold the true Columban ethos.
